Birth Story Part 5

Oh yes, Part 5. So Sunday I'd been a little sore, Mike had been taking care of Max and I had just been laying on the couch when it hit me that I'd had a cramp that really wasn't going away and my whole belly hurt. I'd been getting up and down well, walking around well, and now I could barely walk.

I tried to take some otc meds and rest in bed, but within an hour it was clear something might be wrong. I called the nurse line and they said I needed to go to the hospital, ER. Ugh, no more hospital I thought. Not cool.

So we called my Mom who came up to watch Max because I couldn't drive and off we went to the ER. There could have been a lot of things wrong, an infection, left placenta, etc. etc. so since I wasn't feeling fluish, no fever, etc. they sent me home with an antibiotic to start right away. Well, that night I started feeling a little icky so I called nurse line again that morning and there was an opening in an hour with a different doctor.

So back at the clinic and lo and behold I now had a fever. She said I had to go back to the ER and I almost cried. So back to the hospital and this time was admitted. They were pretty sure it was an infection in the lining of my uterus but not 100% sure. So that started a very long night. I started two different IV antibiotics, and they did everything they could (literally) to get my 103 temp to come down, it finally broke 12 hours after the fever started. The nurse looked very worried- I was getting tired of worried looking nurses. She literally said as she was putting ice bags under my arms and giving me a breathing thing that this was the last things she could do for me to get the fever to come down.

So Tuesday I was starting to feel a little better when I started seeing halo lights, a tunnel of lights, and felt very far away (can't really explain, a sort of out of body feeling) my face got hot, blood pressure spiked, and I told Mike to get the nurse now, no REALLY, right NOW. Again, 10 people around me checking everything. Lights went away and back on morphine I went, they think the pain got to be too much but I wasn't 100% convinced- the preeclampsia could still be causing blood pressure issues at this point which can cause these things. My blood pressure at my vital signs was still pretty high.

So I rested the rest of Tuesday and got a fever again Tuesday night, which meant I could not go home Wednesday, I had to be 24 hours fever free and I started tearing up- I missed my baby so much. So Wednesday I felt relatively better (keep in mind I was still healing as well). I got to see my Max which was amazing, I think he helped me feel so much better! I also got to shower and started walking the halls. Mike and I dreamed of a day/week when we weren't at clinic or the hospital.

Finally, Thursday, after asking every nurse/doctor if I could go home they finally said YES at noon! Fastest discharge ever, I was home by 1:30pm with my baby in my arms- best feeling ever :)

And how have things been since? Physically- we have been back to the clinic each week, but just for follow up for me and once for Max (poor guy has such bad reflux issues right now, we are still working on finding the right combination of tricks to help him out). So for the most part, we are now happy, healthy, and I thank God for bringing us through this whole thing and for giving me Maxwell.

Emotionally- it is tough. I envisioned what I wanted my birth to be and it definitely was nowhere near it. I missed most of my son's first two weeks of life. But now, I've gotten to spend almost every hour with him and he definitely knows his mom! I've cried over this, and am working to let it go and enjoy the time we have now. I am thankful for having leave until Jan. 2nd so I get to spend even more time with my favorite person, Squiggles :)
